Ahead of the heavy holiday traffic expected during the Christmas and New Year festivities, the Kogi State Government has embarked on early interventions to forestall gridlock along the ever-busy Lokoja–Abuja highway.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by the State Security Adviser, Commander Duro Jerry Omodara, on Wednesday led a joint delegation of security chiefs, officials of the Federal and State Ministries of Works, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to inspect vulnerable sections of the route. The assessment focused on damaged stretches of the road that typically worsen traffic congestion during the Yuletide season.
Commander Omodara said the visit followed resolutions reached at the State Executive Council meeting, emphasizing that the government is determined to guarantee safe and seamless movement for commuters. He explained that the inspection would help fast-track remedial works and operational strategies before the December rush.
“Our mission is simple — to ensure that the Lokoja–Abuja road remains stable, safe, and motorable for Christmas. We are working ahead of time to prevent the gridlock that usually characterizes the Yuletide and to support the commendable infrastructural projects undertaken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Kogi State,” he stated. He added that the government would work closely with contractors and security agencies to keep traffic flowing despite ongoing federal construction projects.
The site inspection team was received by the representative of the construction company, Trucrete Solutions Ltd, Engr. Frank Renzo, who assured that his team would open blocked sections and repair critical bad patches before December. He thanked the state government for the collaborative approach and pledged readiness to deliver a motorable corridor for holiday travelers.
Kogi FRSC Sector Commander, Tenimu Yusuf Etuku, also highlighted the strategic importance of the state as a major traffic hub connecting northern and southern Nigeria. He noted that the FRSC is preparing for an early and extensive deployment of personnel and equipment to manage the anticipated surge in vehicular movement.
“We expect heavy motorization as usual during the Yuletide. That is why the state government, in partnership with security agencies, is working to clear obstructions and create free passages to ensure smooth travel for all road users,” Etuku said.
The State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Alesan Olumide Ebenezer, echoed similar commitments, affirming that officers will work alongside the FRSC to maintain order and assist with traffic control throughout the festive season.
Local government leaders, including the Chairman of Lokoja LGA, Hon. Abdullahi Adamu, and the Chairman of Kogi LGA, Hon. Musa Abdulmalik, joined the inspection team, along with media representatives and other security stakeholders.
With these coordinated efforts, the Kogi State Government says it is committed to minimizing security risks and ensuring a safe, smooth, and stress-free travel experience for the millions of commuters expected to pass through the state during the festive period.
