The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has concluded its national election, held on Saturday in Benin City, Edo State, with Alhaji Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu emerging as the President-Elect after defeating Chief Dame Rita Daniels, the mother of actress Regina Daniels, in a closely contested race.
The election, which attracted accredited delegates from 29 state chapters across the country, was conducted in line with the Guild’s constitution and electoral guidelines.
Inside sources disclosed that Rita Daniels spent millions of naira during the election process, particularly on delegates, feeding and hotel accommodation, in a strong bid to secure victory. Despite the extensive campaign efforts by her camp, she lost the election by a narrow margin to Yakubu, the immediate past National Secretary of the Guild.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Ifeoma Okeke emerged as the new National Secretary of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, further completing the new national leadership of the organisation.
Observers described the election atmosphere as vibrant and competitive, underscoring the increasing significance of democratic processes within Nigeria’s creative industry.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria has since commended all candidates, delegates, electoral officials and stakeholders for contributing to a peaceful and successful election, while reaffirming its commitment to transparency, accountability and the advancement of Nigeria’s film and creative sector.
