On Saturday, Nigeria faced a nationwide blackout due to a total system collapse of the national grid. The recent collapse disrupted power supply across the country, affecting distribution companies and leaving many feeders out of service.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) reported the system collapse at 6:41 a.m., leading to a complete loss of supply.

The exact cause of the grid collapse is still under investigation. However, experts point to factors such as inadequate maintenance, outdated infrastructure, and limited investment in the power sector.

Prior to this incident, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had achieved over 400 consecutive days of uninterrupted stability in the power grid. This achievement was celebrated as a significant milestone for the nation’s electricity supply.

Despite privatization efforts, Nigeria continues to grapple with challenges in its electricity sector. Outdated equipment, insufficient funding for maintenance, and capacity constraints remain persistent issues.

As of now, partial supply restoration has occurred. Awada and GCM TCN stations received supply at 18:54 hours, Nibo TCN station and Agu Awka TCN station at 18:55 hours and 18:56 hours respectively, and Oji River TCN station at 19:22 hours. In some parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, power was restored at about 10:40 p.m.

The situation highlights the need for sustained efforts to improve Nigeria’s power infrastructure and ensure reliable electricity supply for its citizens.
