The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has reaffirmed its political alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, endorsed disciplinary measures against erring members, and issued a strong warning against impersonation, following resolutions reached at its 54th (Expanded) National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.
The meeting, convened on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, brought together NEC members from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory and was presided over by ALGON National President, Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal. The gathering also featured prominent past leaders, including Hon. Felix Akabue, Hon. Alabi Kolade David, and Hon. Aminu Mu’azu Maifata, as well as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Odunayo Ategbero.
Deliberating extensively on the state of the association and the nation, the council adopted far-reaching resolutions that underscore both its political direction and internal governance priorities.
Unanimous Endorsement of Tinubu
In one of its most consequential decisions, the NEC unanimously endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027, describing his administration as transformative for grassroots governance.
“The National Executive Council unanimously endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for re-election come 2027,” the communiqué stated.
ALGON declared “total solidarity with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” noting that “his policy trajectory has restored dignity, fiscal capacity and functional autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 Local Governments and Area Councils.”
The council stressed that “continuity of his administration will deepen the grassroots governance,” indicating its belief that sustained leadership under Tinubu would consolidate gains already recorded at the local government level.
The motion for endorsement was moved by former National President Hon. Alabi Kolade David and seconded by Hon. Anani Hamisu Mohammed, who also serves as ALGON Chairman in Plateau State and National Publicity Secretary.
Suspension of Three Chairmen
The NEC also took a firm stance on internal discipline, endorsing the indefinite suspension of three local government chairmen over actions deemed detrimental to the association.
Those suspended include Hon. Zakari Iliyasu, Chairman of Agwara LGA and ALGON Chairman in Niger State; Hon. Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi, Chairman of Kaiama LGA and ALGON Chairman in Kwara State; and Hon. Abba Shehu Tambuwal, Chairman of Tambuwal LGA and ALGON Chairman in Sokoto State.
According to the communiqué, the suspension was for “impersonation, acting against the interest of the Association and abuse of constitutional provisions of the Association.”
The NEC further issued a categorical disclaimer, stating: “The above-mentioned Local Government Chairmen do not have the authority of the NEC to act on behalf of the Association.”
It extended this notice to “MDAs, State Governments, Development Partners, International Organizations, Associates, Stakeholders, Friends and indeed the general public,” urging caution in any engagement involving the affected individuals.
“The general public is urged to be cautious as ALGON will not be responsible for illegal acts and omission by these individuals,” the communiqué added.
The motion leading to the suspensions was moved by Hon. (Dr.) Gbenga Fasua, ALGON Chairman in Ondo State, and seconded by Hon. Muhammad Dahiru Ambursa, ALGON Chairman in Kebbi State.
Confidence in Leadership
Amid the disciplinary actions, the NEC moved to reinforce leadership stability within the association by passing a unanimous vote of confidence in National President Hon. (Engr.) Bello Lawal.
“NEC with one voice, unanimously passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of the National President,” the communiqué noted.
The council pledged unwavering support, stating that it “vowed to fight against any force that will bring disunity to the Association.”
ALGON also commended Lawal’s leadership, applauding “the strategic foresight and relentless drive in repositioning ALGON through multisectoral engagement and inter-agency collaboration.”
The motion for the vote of confidence was moved by Hon. Lelei Isaac Tariye, ALGON Chairman of Bayelsa State, and seconded by Hon. Sefianu Isa, ALGON Chairman of Nasarawa State.
Warning Against Impersonation
In a strong closing note, the NEC called on security agencies to take decisive action against individuals allegedly impersonating officials of the association.
“NEC urges security agencies in the country to deal decisively with any individual or persons illegally parading themselves as agents or officials of ALGON,” the communiqué declared.
A Unified Front
The resolutions from the NEC meeting paint a picture of an association seeking to strengthen its internal cohesion while asserting its influence on national political discourse.
By combining political endorsement, disciplinary action, and leadership consolidation, ALGON has positioned itself as a unified and assertive voice in Nigeria’s governance landscape—particularly at a time when grassroots institutions are increasingly central to national development and electoral strategy.
With its endorsement of President Tinubu and a renewed emphasis on unity and accountability, ALGON appears poised to play a pivotal role in shaping both governance outcomes and political alignments in the lead-up to 2027.
