Nigeria’s Federal Government has reversed the suspension placed on degree certificates obtained from universities in the Republics of Benin and Togo, a development that has brought renewed hope to more than 22,000 Nigerian graduates whose academic credentials had been rendered uncertain.

The earlier restriction was introduced as part of a broader effort to combat certificate racketeering and safeguard the credibility of Nigeria’s educational system. However, the policy had inadvertently affected thousands of Nigerians who legitimately earned degrees from institutions in the neighbouring countries.

The decision to reverse the suspension followed a motion by the House of Representatives of Nigeria urging the Federal Government to reconsider its blanket invalidation of certificates obtained from universities in the two countries.

Government officials explained that the lifting of the suspension came after extensive consultations and reforms aimed at strengthening verification procedures and ensuring that only accredited institutions and authentic qualifications are recognized going forward.

Education stakeholders have widely welcomed the development, describing it as a significant intervention that restores hope and opportunities for thousands of affected graduates.

An education consultant and stakeholder in the Benin Republic academic community, Ugo Magnus, praised both the leadership of the National Assembly of Nigeria and Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their roles in resolving the issue.

According to Magnus, the government’s decision reflects responsiveness to the concerns raised by citizens and demonstrates a commitment to protecting the future of Nigerian youths.

He noted that the reversal would positively affect the more than 22,000 graduates who had struggled with employment challenges and barriers to further education since the suspension was imposed.

Magnus further urged the Federal Government to deepen cooperation with education authorities in neighbouring countries in order to prevent future abuses while ensuring that genuine students are not unfairly punished.

Many of the affected graduates have since expressed relief, saying the government’s decision restores confidence in the system and reopens opportunities that had been closed to them for months.

Education analysts also believe the policy reversal will help reintegrate thousands of graduates into the labour market and reduce anxiety among Nigerian students studying in institutions across West Africa.

The Federal Government had in January 2024 announced the suspension of accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates obtained from universities in Benin Republic and Togo following growing concerns over certificate fraud.
