The Coalition of Nigeria Football Lovers has launched a scathing attack on the proposed tenure extension of Dr. Mohammed Sanusi as General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Labeling the move “unacceptable,” the Coalition cites Sanusi’s 10-year tenure as a period of significant decline and underachievement in Nigerian football.
“Football plays a critical role in harmonizing Nigerians, transcending ethnic, religious, and geographical divides,” noted Adegboyega Olaitan, National Secretary of the Coalition. “It’s imperative that the NFF leadership prioritizes the development of the sport, rather than perpetuating mediocrity.”
The Coalition emphasized that Sanusi’s leadership has failed to translate Nigeria’s abundance of talented footballers into tangible success. Instead, Nigerian football has suffered under his tenure, characterized by discriminatory staffing practices, unqualified appointments, and a lack of transparency and accountability.
Olaitan stressed that the proposed tenure extension is a step in the wrong direction. “Sanusi’s leadership has failed to yield success, and it’s time for a change,” he said. “We demand a new era of leadership that will revitalize Nigerian football and harness its potential for national unity and pride.”
The Coalition urged the Federal Government, Sports Ministry, and NFF stakeholders to reject the proposed extension. Olaitan argued that this decision would pave the way for fresh leadership and a renewed focus on developing Nigerian football.
As Nigerian football fans eagerly await change, the Coalition’s stance echoes their sentiments: accountability and reform are overdue in the NFF leadership. With the future of Nigerian football hanging in the balance, the Coalition’s call for change has sparked hopes for a brighter future.
