ABUJA – The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of OKAY A New Nigeria Movement has intensified calls for greater accountability in public office, urging security agencies to launch a comprehensive investigation into the reported death of a nurse, Mary Habila, at the residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, while also calling for the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, to step aside pending an inquiry into allegations levelled against him.

The group made the demands during a press briefing held in Abuja on Sunday, July 19, where its FCT State Chairman, Hon. Mathew Chinedu Chukwuemeka, addressed journalists on what he described as pressing issues of governance, transparency and national security.

According to the movement, the reported death of Mary Habila raises significant public interest and should be subjected to an impartial and transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure justice.

Expressing sympathy to the deceased’s family, the organisation urged relevant security and judicial authorities to carry out a thorough probe, stressing that public confidence in government institutions depends on accountability regardless of the status of those involved.

The group also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure an independent investigation into allegations surrounding the Office of the Chief of Staff and the activities of an organisation identified by the movement as PFIPC. It maintained that allowing the Chief of Staff to step aside during the investigation would reinforce public confidence in the integrity of the process.

Beyond the specific cases, FCT-OKAY lamented the country’s worsening security situation, citing the persistent rise in kidnapping and violent crime as evidence of what it described as declining public safety.

The movement urged the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen efforts to protect lives and property, warning that Nigerians would ultimately evaluate the administration’s performance on security and governance during the 2027 General Elections.

On the political front, the organisation formally endorsed the presidential and vice-presidential ticket of Mr. Peter Obi and Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), describing the pair as leaders capable of tackling insecurity, reviving the economy and restoring confidence in governance.

The group also felicitated Mr. Obi on his birthday, praising his resilience and commitment to democratic ideals despite political challenges, while expressing optimism about his leadership aspirations.

Hon. Mathew reaffirmed the movement’s commitment to promoting good governance, accountability and citizen welfare, noting that effective leadership must be driven by responsibility and service to the people.

He expressed confidence that the Presidency would give serious consideration to the concerns raised in the interest of national unity, justice and institutional credibility.

As of press time, there had been no official reaction from the Federal Ministry of Works, the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President or the Presidency regarding the demands made by the group.
