The All-Africa Students’ Union (AASU) has applauded the $467 million investment by the Dangote Refinery in deploying 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks across Nigeria, describing it as a “landmark in Africa’s energy journey” and a “model for industrial ambition and national development.”

In a strong message of commendation personally signed by its President, H.E. Osisiogu Osikenyi E., AASU hailed the initiative as “transformative,” emphasizing its far-reaching implications for fuel distribution, economic sustainability, and youth empowerment.

“This transformative initiative is a landmark in Africa’s energy journey, representing not only a technological leap but also a strategic move that is set to slash fuel transportation costs by a remarkable $1.1 billion annually,” AASU stated.

The student body emphasized the operational advantage of the new CNG-powered fleet, noting that it will enable the direct delivery of fuel to petrol stations and industrial hubs—”bypassing unnecessary middlemen, helping reduce pump prices, and strengthening the nation’s supply chain resilience.”

Of particular note to the Union is the positive effect this initiative will have on Nigeria’s over 42 million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). According to Osisiogu, “We particularly hail the Dangote Group for responding to the urgent energy needs of over 42 million Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria, many of which are currently reeling under the weight of unsustainable energy costs.”

He continued, “This initiative promises not just economic relief, but also fresh momentum for innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth.”

In terms of job creation, AASU celebrated the potential of the project to provide thousands of employment opportunities to Nigerian youth, a demographic hit hard by unemployment and underemployment.

“The All-Africa Students’ Union also celebrates the job creation potential of this project—expected to generate over 15,000 employment opportunities—and its broader impact on reshaping Nigeria’s energy and logistics landscape in a sustainable and forward-looking manner.”

As Africa’s largest student movement, AASU affirmed its commitment to championing visionary leadership and scalable solutions to the continent’s most pressing challenges. “We believe this exemplary private sector leadership by Dangote Refinery serves as a model for industrial ambition and national development,” Osisiogu declared. “We urge other stakeholders across the continent to emulate such impactful investment in clean energy, infrastructure, and job creation.”

The union concluded its message with an optimistic outlook: “We remain confident that this milestone marks yet another chapter in the renaissance of African enterprise and economic self-reliance.”

The Dangote Group’s investment is widely seen as a bold step toward reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imported refined products and foreign logistics, signaling a new era in locally-driven innovation and infrastructure.
