Early Monday morning, a jailbreak at the Federal Correctional Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, resulted in the escape of 12 inmates. The Kogi State Information Commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo, expressed his concern over the incident, describing it as “unfortunate.”
Fanwo revealed that one of the escapees had been re-arrested but emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. “The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns.
“This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system,” he stated.
Governor Usman Ododo has directed security agencies to take measures to prevent such security breaches in the future.
Fanwo underscored the importance of public cooperation in tracking down the escapees: “We call on the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate will be held accountable,” he warned.
While urging citizens to remain calm, Fanwo assured them that their safety remains the government’s priority. “There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” he added.
The incident has prompted concerns over the security and management of the correctional facility, with further investigations expected in the coming days.
