The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has expressed enthusiastic support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, following his recent strategic engagement with Bauchi State Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, a key figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

This development, according to the DWI, represents a significant step towards fostering political collaboration and national unity in Nigeria.

In a press statement signed by Dr. AbdulRazak Ahmed, Director of Strategic Communication for the DWI, the organization commended Obi for his decision to engage with the PDP, describing it as a courageous move.

“We commend Peter Obi for his courageous decision to embrace the most powerful opposition party in the country, thereby positioning himself squarely within the mainstream political discourse,” the statement read.

Obi’s visit to Bauchi State was marked by a respectful homage to His Royal Highness, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji (Dr) Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu. The DWI highlighted this gesture as a reflection of Obi’s recognition of the vital role traditional institutions play in promoting peace and unity.

“Traditional leaders have historically been instrumental in fostering dialogue and understanding among diverse groups, and their involvement in political discussions enhances the legitimacy of efforts aimed at fostering national cohesion,” the statement emphasized.

Governor Bala Mohammed, who also serves as the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, praised Obi’s dedication to nation-building and inclusive leadership.

The DWI echoed this sentiment, noting that such commendation underscores the importance of collaboration among leaders from different political backgrounds.

“Governor Mohammed’s acknowledgment of Obi’s efforts serves as a clarion call for other leaders to engage in constructive dialogue rather than adversarial politics, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives can coexist and contribute to the greater good,” the statement added.
