Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocates (ARRA) has issued a passionate call for solidarity and unity in championing the cause of refugees worldwide, following this year’s World Refugee Day. The NGO emphasized the need for collective efforts to make a significant impact in the lives of the more than 32 million refugees across the globe.

In a statement released by its Executive Director, Dr Okey Ezugwu Esq, ARRA highlighted the unique stories of resilience, courage, and survival that each refugee carries.

Dr Ezugwu, Lawyer and retired Assistant Comptroller General of Immigration Service in Nigeria, urged the international community to pay attention to the plight of asylum seekers and refugees, who face unimaginable challenges in different regions of the world.

The ongoing conflict in Syria, which has led to the displacement of 6.7 million people, was cited by ARRA as one of the largest refugee crises globally.

The NGO noted that families are being torn apart, homes destroyed, and dreams shattered, which are the harsh realities faced by Syrian refugees.

Citing the case of Afghanistan, with 2.7 million Afghan refugees, as instability, violence, and insecurity continue to plague the country, ARRA said that many forced to embark on perilous escapes in search of safety.

ARRA also shed light on the struggles of refugees in South Sudan, where 2.3 million people seek refuge in neighboring countries amidst civil war and famine. The organization emphasized the overcrowded camps and limited resources that exacerbate the challenges faced by South Sudanese refugees. Similarly, in the Central African Republic, conflict and violence have displaced many, affecting millions of lives.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) remains a hotspot for displacement due to armed conflicts and political instability, with over 130 million people globally currently displaced, including 32 million refugees. Additionally, the armed insurrection by the Amazonia separatist group in Cameroon has created a refugee crisis of monumental proportions, with more than 60,000 refugees massed up along the Cameroon-Nigeria border.

In response to the global refugee crisis, ARRA called for qualitative action by countries hosting refugees. The organization urged governments and the United Nations to invest in solutions to address the root causes of displacement, promote welcoming policies, provide community support, and foster global unity in embracing refugees.

ARRA’s plea for solidarity and concrete action resonates with the urgent need to support and protect refugees worldwide, ensuring that they have the opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute positively to society. By standing #WithRefugees, ARRA believes that together, we can create a world where refugees are not just tolerated but embraced.
