The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a multi-billion-naira transnational methamphetamine syndicate involving Nigerian and Mexican operatives, in what authorities described as a major victory against organized criminal enterprises threatening Nigeria’s economy and national security.

The sweeping operation led to the arrest of 10 suspects, including an alleged Nigerian drug kingpin, three Mexican methamphetamine production specialists, and six local collaborators, while illicit substances and chemical materials valued at over N480 billion were recovered from a massive clandestine laboratory concealed in a forest in Ogun State.

Briefing journalists at the NDLEA headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the agency, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), said the breakthrough followed months of strategic intelligence gathering and coordinated surveillance operations across Ogun and Lagos states. Marwa explained that operatives of the agency’s Special Operations Unit carried out simultaneous raids targeting a forest-based meth production site in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State and luxury properties linked to the alleged cartel leader in Lagos.

According to him, the operation exposed an industrial-scale drug manufacturing network allegedly operated by the Anochili Innocent Drug Trafficking Organisation in collaboration with foreign technical experts imported into Nigeria to facilitate methamphetamine production.

He noted that the clandestine laboratory, located within Abidagba forest, represented the largest illegal meth production facility ever discovered in the country.

The NDLEA boss disclosed that operatives arrested seven suspects at the forest laboratory while they were allegedly processing illicit narcotics.

Among those apprehended were three Mexican nationals identified as Martinez Felix Nemecto, Jesus López Valles, and Torrero Juan Carlos, who investigators said were recruited specifically for their technical expertise in methamphetamine production.

The Nigerian suspects arrested at the laboratory included Nwankwo Sunday Christian, Igwe Abuchi Remijus, Ifeanyichukwu Chibuike Joshua, and Egwuonwu Uchenna Victor.

Marwa further revealed that another tactical team simultaneously raided a residence located at Golf Estate, Lakowe, Lekki, Lagos, where the alleged cartel mastermind, Anochili Innocent, was arrested.

Investigators reportedly recovered the passports and mobile phones of the arrested Mexican nationals from the residence, strengthening evidence linking the suspect to the international drug operation.

Follow-up operations later extended to another property in Mayfair Estate, Lakowe, where another key suspect, Kingsley Orike Omonughwa, was apprehended. NDLEA operatives also stormed the residence of another alleged syndicate member, Emeka Nwobum, believed to have operated as the cartel’s logistics and storage coordinator.

Marwa stated that specialized forensic teams deployed to the clandestine facility recovered over 2,419 kilograms of crystallized methamphetamine, precursor chemicals, and industrial solvents used in narcotics production.

He estimated the international market value of the seized materials at approximately $362.9 million, equivalent to over N480 billion.

The agency also confiscated vehicles allegedly used by the syndicate, including a Toyota Tacoma linked to activities at the forest laboratory and a Toyota Highlander recovered from the residence of the suspected kingpin.

Marwa warned that the NDLEA would continue to intensify its offensive against international drug cartels attempting to establish manufacturing hubs within Nigeria, stressing that the country would remain hostile territory for organized narcotics operations.

He expressed concern over the emerging trend of foreign criminal specialists being recruited by local cartels to establish drug production factories in remote communities across the country.

The NDLEA chairman maintained that the latest operation, coming shortly after the agency’s recent takedown of another international drug trafficking syndicate allegedly headed by Simon Amadi, demonstrates the growing operational capacity of Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency.

He commended the courage and professionalism of NDLEA operatives and forensic teams involved in the operation and also acknowledged the support of international law enforcement partners in combating transnational organized crime.

Marwa urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities within their communities, warning that many criminal networks now disguise illegal drug operations under the cover of legitimate businesses and agricultural ventures.

He reiterated the agency’s commitment to sustaining the nationwide offensive against drug trafficking and clandestine manufacturing networks in order to protect public health, national security, and the country’s international reputation.
