In a resounding demonstration of regional solidarity, Hon. Hamisu Anani, Executive Chairman of Wase Local Government Area and National Publicity Secretary of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), joined West African leaders at the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) summit in Accra, Ghana.

The three-day Executive Strategic Leadership and Management Course for Effective Local Governance transcended routine training to become a crucible for transformative ideas.

Hon. Anani, the ALGON spokesperson, noted that ALGON’s delegation brought together a wealth of perspectives designed to position local governments as the heartbeat of Africa’s democratic and developmental future.

The Nigerian team comprised distinguished ALGON NEC members, including Hon. Ikenna Adikibe, Deputy National President of ALGON; Ibrahim Hassan Jauro (Taraba); Hon. Olusegun Ojo (Ekiti); Hon. Iliyasu Zakari (Niger); Hon. Chief Isaiah Esiovwa (Delta), and representatives from the ALGON Secretariat, Elder I. Otuonye.

Honourable Mohammed emphasized that the summit was not merely about learning but about redefining governance at the grassroots level. “This is about unlocking Africa’s economic potential by empowering local councils to deliver on their constitutional mandate,” he declared, citing Section 7(1) and the Fourth Schedule of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The presence of the Nigerian delegation signaled a paradigm shift: local governments are no longer passive administrators but active architects of transformation.

Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration with the Nigerian Governors Forum, aligning with federal priorities, and ensuring that development is community-driven, people-focused, and sustainable.
Hon. Mohammed, who also serves as ALGON Chairman in Plateau State, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Caleb Mutfwang for championing local government autonomy and for his unwavering support of grassroots administration across the state’s 17 LGAs. He noted that such backing, alongside the commitment of other Governors, demonstrates Nigeria’s readiness to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with West African counterparts in shaping a new governance narrative.

This summit marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of local governance across the region, underscoring ALGON’s determination to amplify the voice of grassroots leadership and to drive Africa’s democratic and developmental agenda from the ground up.
