The Gombe State Government has secured federal approval to transform the newly reconstructed General Hospital Kumo into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC), following a request submitted by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
The governor expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the initiative, describing it as a significant boost to the healthcare system in the state and the wider Northeast region.
Governor Yahaya highlighted that this new FMC would serve as a state-of-the-art teaching hospital for the Federal University of Kashere and Lincoln University, Kumo.
He expressed optimism that the medical practitioners trained at the facility would reinforce the healthcare workforce in Gombe State upon completing their education.
The governor further reiterated his administration’s dedication to delivering quality and affordable healthcare services.
His health sector initiatives include remodelling the Gombe Specialist Hospital, upgrading general hospitals in Bajoga and Kaltungo, constructing a new general hospital in Kumo, and revitalising 114 primary healthcare centres across the state.
Additionally, Governor Yahaya acknowledged the support of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Mohammed Ali Pate, for advancing this crucial healthcare transformation.
Announced on Sunday, the conversion of the General Hospital Kumo makes the Kumo FMC the second federal health institution in Gombe State, following the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe city.
According to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, the FMC will contribute to advanced healthcare delivery, serve as a tertiary medical facility, and aid in training medical professionals, further strengthening the region’s health sector infrastructure.
