While welcoming General Ike Nwachukwu (rtd.) as the newly appointed Pro-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), the Save Enugu Group (SEG), a frontline nongovernmental organization (NGO) and socio-political pressure group noted for its commitment to promoting good governance has vowed to petition President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if past administration’s wrong actions were not corrected.

In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Comrade James Ezema, the SEG noted that with his wealth of experience and unwavering dedication, General Nwachukwu is poised to steer UNN toward a brighter future.

Speaking on General Nwachukwu’s credentials, the SEG said “General Nwachukwu’s distinguished military career speaks volumes. His leadership during critical moments in our nation’s history demonstrates resilience, strategic thinking, and a commitment to service.

“So, we find the appointment of the retired General as a round peg in a round hole as the university needed someone who is highly experienced in leadership, and at the same time very disciplined, to reposition the tertiary institution to the UNN we had in the past.

“The General is also coming after the university witnessed the worst administration in recent times, with the trend of the former administration birthing the current Acting Vice-chancellor of the university through a kangaroo selection process.

“Therefore, we strongly urge the new Pro-Chancellor to critically examine what transpired under the watch of the immediate past university with a to correcting the wrongs to ensure the urgent return of UNN to the dreams of its founding fathers.

“We call on the new Pro-Chancellor to ensure that the outcome of the disputed selection process which produced the current acting Vice-Chancellor do not stand as we shall not hesitate to formally petition President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the matter.

“We also draw the attention of the new Pro-Chancellor to of UNN to other pressing challenges faced by the tertiary institution, including infrastructure and facilities decay as the university currently grapples with inadequate infrastructure, outdated facilities, and dirty environment. No thanks to the administration of the immediate past Vice-Chancellor whose leadership was anything but excellent.

“Also of great concern is the security and safety in the University community and environs to ensure the safe academic environment for students, staff, and property.

“There is also the need for improved administrative efficiency and better community engagements. UNN should actively engage with its local community, addressing societal needs and fostering partnerships.

“A situation where a university and its host communities would be in court over allegations bordering on environmental degradation does not speak well of UNN in the eyes of the international community”, the SEG said.
