The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully foiled a late-night robbery attempt in Zone E Extension of the Apo Resettlement area, Abuja, rescuing multiple victims and recovering a stolen vehicle.
The incident, which occurred at about 10:30 pm on Monday, followed a distress call from a commercial motorcyclist who reported sustained gunfire in the vicinity.
In a swift response, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Apo Division, CSP Uchenna Igwebuike, immediately mobilized his Ambush and Surveillance Teams to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers were met with heavy gunfire from the suspected criminals.
According to a statement released by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the attackers engaged the police operatives in a fierce gun battle. Reinforcements led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Isyaku Sharu, promptly joined the operation. The superior firepower and tactical response from the police forced the armed assailants to flee into the surrounding hills.
“Following the distress alert, our officers were immediately mobilized to the scene. Upon arrival, they came under intense attack but repelled the assailants with superior firepower,” the statement read.
During the operation, three victims suffering various degrees of injuries from the attack were rescued by the police. A light green Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 620 AU, belonging to one of the victims, was also recovered at the scene.
The rescued individuals were rushed to Sahad Hospital in the Apo Resettlement area for emergency medical treatment. Sadly, one of the victims later succumbed to his injuries and was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His remains have been deposited in the hospital’s morgue.
In the aftermath of the incident, the police have launched a joint manhunt in collaboration with local vigilante groups to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased victim. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the territory.
CP Adewale also appealed to residents, especially those in and around the Apo Resettlement area, to remain vigilant and report any individuals with suspicious injuries, particularly gunshot wounds, to the nearest police station. He urged the public to continue supporting the police with timely information to enhance security across the FCT.
