….As Coalition Highlights Statewide Health Infrastructure Drive, Digital Transformation and Training of Healthcare Workforce
Enugu, Nigeria — In a strong endorsement of the health sector reforms underway in Enugu State, the Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP), Enugu State Chapter, has hailed the administration of Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for what it described as “visionary leadership, dedication, and tangible results” in its effort to deliver quality, accessible, and future-ready healthcare to the people of the state.
This commendation comes as part of the coalition’s ongoing sector-by-sector assessment of the performance of Governor Mbah’s administration since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.
In a press release jointly signed by Chief Innocent Ezeoha (State Coordinator), Dr. Afam Ani (Chairman), and Barr. Ken Ikeh (Secretary), the CRPP stated:
“Governor Mbah’s administration has embarked on a historic expansion of healthcare infrastructure with the construction of 260 fully-equipped Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across all electoral wards. These facilities are designed to operate 24 hours daily, thereby extending essential healthcare services to the grassroots and tackling critical health challenges such as maternal and infant mortality with proactive and life-saving interventions.”
According to the coalition, this development marks a significant step toward closing the healthcare gap between urban and rural communities.
“The strategy underscores a commitment to strengthening the healthcare delivery chain and ensuring proximity of quality care to residents across the state,” the statement read.
The CRPP further acknowledged the administration’s plan to build a world-class secondary healthcare facility in each of the state’s 17 local government areas.
“Notable facilities such as Nsukka General Hospital, Agbani General Hospital, Uwani General Hospital, and Oji River General Hospital are receiving attention as part of this strategic vision,” the coalition noted.
A standout project praised by the coalition is the ongoing construction of a 300-bed International Hospital at Rangers Avenue, adjacent to the International Conference Center, Enugu. The CRPP described the project as “a flagship symbol of the administration’s commitment to global standards in healthcare.”
“This state-of-the-art facility, when completed, is expected to provide cutting-edge medical services, attract medical tourism, and serve as a model of excellence in healthcare delivery across the country and beyond,” it declared.
In the tertiary health sector, the CRPP applauded the modernization efforts at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) Teaching Hospital, which include the development of a new digital laboratory and other key infrastructure improvements.
“The hospital is undergoing extensive revamping aimed at modernizing its operations. These improvements are part of the administration’s broader efforts to align healthcare services in the state with global best practices,” the coalition explained.
The administration’s focus on health personnel development also drew praise.
“The government has upgraded several schools of nursing and midwifery to full-fledged Colleges of Nursing Sciences. This visionary move will help boost the pipeline of highly skilled healthcare professionals vital for sustaining and maximizing the benefits of the state’s expanding healthcare infrastructure,” the CRPP said.
Digital health was another highlight in the CRPP’s assessment. The coalition commended the rollout of the Electronic Health Management System (e-HMS), which is already transforming patient management in Enugu State.
“Recognizing the indispensable role of technology in modern healthcare, the Mbah administration has launched the digitization of patient records to ensure more efficient healthcare delivery, better data management, and enhanced planning,” the statement emphasized.
However, the CRPP did not shy away from offering constructive recommendations.
“We recommend that the administration intensify efforts in continuous training and retraining of healthcare personnel to match infrastructural development with world-class service delivery,” the group advised.
The coalition also encouraged strategic collaborations.
“We urge the strengthening of partnerships with private sector stakeholders, donor organizations, and international development agencies to ensure long-term financial sustainability, rapid technological advancements, and consistent quality improvement,” the CRPP noted.
On the digital front, the coalition highlighted the need for robust support systems.
“As the state advances the digitization of healthcare services, we urge that particular attention be paid to cybersecurity, stable electricity supply, and internet connectivity, especially in rural health centers, to ensure the seamless functioning of the Electronic Health Management System,” the release added.
In conclusion, the CRPP reaffirmed its support for the administration’s commitment to public welfare, noting:
“Governor Mbah’s performance thus far reflects a clear understanding of the interconnection between a healthy population and sustainable economic growth. As our sectoral assessment continues, we remain dedicated to providing objective reviews that celebrate achievements, encourage constructive feedback, and promote the collective goal of building a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Enugu State.”
