In a significant move towards bolstering defence capabilities, Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON, mni, has called for enhanced collaboration between Nigeria and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in the defence sector.
His remarks came during a high-level meeting with a delegation from Pakistan led by General Shahir Shamsad at Ship House, Abuja.
During the discussions, Minister Badaru lauded Pakistan’s cost-effective counter-terrorism strategies, emphasizing their relevance and potential as a model for Nigeria. Highlighting the long-standing relationship between both nations, the Minister said, “The history of cooperation between Nigeria and Pakistan provides a solid foundation for expanding collaboration in the defence sector.”
He stressed that such partnerships would not only boost military capabilities but also foster trust and mutual understanding.
The Minister expressed his support for forging partnerships free of coercion, citing Pakistan’s success in tackling terrorism and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) using locally developed technology and affordable drones.
Key areas of future collaboration include advancements in drone technology and strengthening the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) to elevate local military manufacturing and innovation.
General Shahir Shamsad, leading the Pakistani delegation, commended DICON’s achievements in local production of military equipment.
He recognized Nigeria as a pivotal player in Africa with substantial geo-strategic importance to Pakistan. He underlined that enhanced cooperation advantageous for both nations.
This high-profile visit marks a renewed commitment to Nigeria-Pakistan defence relations, paving the way for shared technological progress and improved security. Both countries aim to leverage their strengths to address common challenges and achieve shared goals in the defence sector.
