The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a vandalization incident on its 330kV Lokoja-Gwagwalada transmission line 1, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, November 9, 2024.
According to TCN’s spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, engineers attempted to re-energize the line but were unsuccessful due to tripping. A subsequent inspection revealed significant damage to transmission towers T306, T307, and T308, with two spans of aluminum conductor stolen.
Although TCN continues to supply bulk power through the line’s second circuit, efforts are underway to replace the stolen conductors. This incident underscores the growing concern of vandalism targeting transmission infrastructure, severely impacting Nigeria’s power grid stability and expansion.
TCN has expressed concerns over the recurring attacks on transmission lines and towers nationwide, citing recent incidents in the Gwagwalada area. The company urges the public, particularly communities hosting transmission infrastructure, to collaborate with security operatives in combating vandalism.
“This menace undermines efforts to strengthen our transmission system and ultimately harms us all,” TCN stated. “We appeal to the public to join us in protecting our national assets.”
The incident highlights the need for increased vigilance and cooperation to safeguard Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
