A group of concerned Nigerians, known as The Patriots, has reiterated the need for a new constitution for Nigeria, stating that the current one is hindering the country’s progress and development.

In a statement issued at the end of the formal inauguration of the Advocacy Committee of The Patriots towards the actualization of a People’s Constitution for Nigeria, the group argued that even with the best leaders, the current constitution would not allow them to effectively tackle the country’s challenges.

The Patriots cited insecurity, economic decline, poor education and health facilities, infrastructure decay, corruption, and divisiveness as some of the challenges facing Nigeria. They attributed these problems to the current constitution, which they described as quasi-federal and militarily influenced.

The group noted that the 1960/63 constitution, which was negotiated and agreed upon by Nigeria’s founding fathers, served the country well in its early years. They argued that a truly federal constitution would facilitate productivity, economic development, and national unity.

The Patriots called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to initiate steps towards giving Nigeria a new democratic people’s constitution. They emphasized that this is necessary for the country’s survival and prosperity.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Chairman of The Patriots, signed the statement, which was issued on August 26, 2024. The group’s advocacy for a new constitution has been ongoing, with the aim of promoting a more productive economy, effective governance, and national unity.
