Nigerians are undeterred in their plans to stage a nationwide citizens’ protest on August 1st, despite government attempts to intimidate and threaten them.

The United Action Front of Civil Society (UAFCS) has thrown its weight behind the protesters, urging the government to take immediate action to address their demands.

The protests are a response to the growing hunger and hardships faced by Nigerians, with citizens demanding the reversal of fuel prices to pre-January 2023 levels, reduction of electricity tariffs, drastic reduction of government profligacy, and democratic reforms of the constitution.

Olawale Okunniyi, Head of the Coordinating Secretariat of UAFCS, warned that “no amount of threats, hoodwinking, and games by the government can stop the peaceful nationwide protests.”

He emphasized that the government must take immediate action to address citizens’ demands to avert the protests.

The government’s failure to do so will be responsible for any unintended consequences of the protests. Okunniyi stressed that “government should be held responsible for not taking urgent steps in addressing the crucial concerns and interests of Nigerians critical to the planned nationwide mass protest.”

With the protests looming, the government is running out of time to address the grievances of Nigerians.

The citizens’ demands are clear, and it remains to be seen whether the government will take the necessary steps to address them.
