Barrister Blossom Mmesomachi Ubani, newly called to the Nigerian Bar, has declared that her decision to pursue a career in law was inspired by her passion for justice and human rights, not by the prestige the profession commands.
Ubani, a native of Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, made the statement shortly after her call to bar ceremony in Abuja. She criticized practices within the legal profession that, in her view, contribute to the backlog of cases in Nigerian courts.
“The congestion in our courts is not just the fault of underfunding or weak institutions,” she said. “Some lawyers deliberately prolong cases because they profit from delays. Justice delayed is justice denied, and we must take responsibility.”
She explained that her background shaped her determination to use the law as an instrument of service. “Growing up, I saw people denied their rights simply because they could not afford proper legal representation. I promised myself I would use the law to defend the voiceless,” Ubani noted.
The young lawyer appealed to her colleagues to uphold integrity, stressing that the profession should be regarded as a call to service rather than “a business in gown.”
Her father, Chief Ifeanyi Ubani, expressed gratitude to God for enabling him to witness the milestone in his daughter’s life. The occasion was also attended by prominent businessman and philanthropist Chief Mike Jacob Nwoko, Eze Igbo Angwandodo of Gwagwalada, Obilo James, and other dignitaries who celebrated with the family.
