The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has issued a press release urging immediate action to address the ongoing cholera outbreak in the country.

The outbreak, which has been declared a national emergency by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC), has affected 31 states and poses a significant threat to public health.

Worried by this development, Hon. Maifata spoke on Wednesday on arrival from Lafia the Nasarawa state capital ahead of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) event at the Congress Hall Presidential Villa; marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2024.

ALGON’s National President called upon all Local Government Chairmen to take swift action within their respective councils. They must implement responsive strategies and mitigation plans tailored to their communities to contain the spread of cholera.

Hon. Maifata expressed concern about the low level of personal and environmental hygiene in rural communities. Factors such as lack of information, poor habits, and inadequate awareness contribute to the vulnerability of the rural populace. ALGON aims to address this through a comprehensive sensitization program using local channels like town criers, town hall meetings, and inter-faith gatherings.

ALGON emphasized that strengthening local governments is long overdue. Poor financial status has hindered their ability to fulfill critical responsibilities, including public health management. The 1999 Constitution (as Amended) outlines these responsibilities, but limited resources have hampered effective action.

Hon. Maifata appealed to both Federal and State Governments to support local councils in their efforts. ALGON will engage LGAs’ Chairmen to ensure effective messaging reaches communities through extensive enlightenment campaigns. Strategies include promoting safety consciousness (such as handwashing), proper food handling, and sanitation practices.

ALGON called for the inclusion of Local Government Health and Community Workers in the NCDC’s multi-sectoral National Cholera Technical Working Action Roll Out. Collaboration with stakeholders like the Federal Ministries of Environment and Water Resources, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, the Red Cross, and USAID is crucial for an effective response plan.

Recent NCDC statistics reveal alarming death rates due to apathy and negative perceptions surrounding the cholera vaccine. Hon. Maifata emphasized the importance of basic orientation to prevent contamination.

ALGON’s urgent appeal underscores the need for coordinated efforts at all levels of government and among various stakeholders. By prioritizing hygiene, awareness, and collaboration, Nigeria can mitigate the impact of this devastating outbreak and protect its communities.
