The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismantled illegal structures encroaching on its transmission line Right of Way in parts of Enugu State, in a decisive move to protect critical power infrastructure and guarantee public safety. The clearance exercise targeted fences and other constructions erected dangerously close to Tower 31 of the Ugwuaji–Makurdi 330kV Double Circuit transmission line at Akpuoga Nike in Enugu East Local Government Area, as well as other unauthorized structures along the corridor of a 132kV transmission line.
TCN in statement signed by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, and dated December 20, 2025, explained that the affected structures posed serious safety risks and obstructed access required for effective maintenance of the transmission lines.
According to the transmission company, such encroachments not only endanger lives and property but also hinder routine inspections and emergency repair works carried out by its linesmen, thereby threatening the reliability of power supply.
Before the demolition exercise commenced, TCN said it had consistently undertaken sensitization campaigns to educate residents and traders within the affected areas, warning them against erecting structures or conducting activities within transmission corridors. Despite these repeated warnings, the illegal developments persisted, leaving the company with no option but to enforce compliance with established safety regulations.
The company described the action as unavoidable, stressing that it was necessitated by the imperative to prevent accidents, safeguard lives and property, and ensure unhindered access to transmission facilities at all times. TCN emphasized that protecting the integrity of the national grid remains a priority, particularly in areas where high-voltage transmission lines traverse residential and commercial zones.
TCN further reminded prospective land developers and the general public that the approved Right of Way clearance for transmission lines is 50 metres for 330kV lines, measured as 25 metres on each side of the line, and 30 metres for 132kV transmission lines, measured as 15 metres on each side. The company underscored that strict adherence to these safety clearances is essential for reliable power delivery and the overall safety of host communities.
