The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kebbi State, Hon. Muhammad Dahiru Ambursa, has received equipment from UNICEF to support the state’s Birth Registration Project, pledging the commitment of ALGON Chairmen to the initiative.

The handover, described as a historic milestone, is part of an ongoing nationwide effort to revolutionize birth certificate registration and ensure that every Nigerian child is recognized and protected.

It follows the successful Training of Trainers Workshop conducted across various locations in the country, which equipped State Coordinators, Local Government Focal Point Persons, and other stakeholders with the technical knowledge and tools required to drive the programme.

In partnership with UNICEF, ALGON has committed to providing oversight and collaboration in the process, with the goal of guaranteeing that every child counts, every child is visible to the state, and every child enjoys the fundamental right to an identity.

Officials noted that the initiative will strengthen data systems, improve planning, and enhance social protection structures nationwide.

“Birth registration is not just a statistic—it is the foundation of every child’s right to belong,” Ambursa emphasized, noting that without proper documentation, children risk exclusion from essential services such as education and healthcare.

So far, nine states—Niger, Bayelsa, Taraba, Lagos, Kogi, Gombe, Kebbi, and Yobe—have joined the campaign, with more states expected to follow. Stakeholders believe this development marks a decisive step toward universal registration, safeguarding children’s rights, and fostering inclusive development across the country.

The event was attended by ALGON Chairmen from Kebbi State local governments, as well as representatives of UNICEF, including Umma Musa, and the National Population Commission, represented by Okoronkwo Gloria.
