The community of Orozo, in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, is reeling from the tragic loss of John Johnson Enyo-Ojo, a young graduate with roots in the Igala ethnic group, who was brutally murdered on March 29, 2025. The shocking incident occurred in Zaina, near Angwar Hakimi, where Johnson, attending a Boys’ Brigade camp, fell victim to an ambush laid by suspected herdsmen.

Johnson’s death has left his family and community grappling with immeasurable grief and a call for justice.

Having recently lost his father after a prolonged illness, Johnson’s family had scarcely begun to heal from one tragedy before being thrust into another. The senseless killing of the promising young graduate has shattered not only his loved ones but also the wider community, igniting calls for greater security and accountability in the region.

The incident unfolded during the Boys’ Brigade camp organized in the Zaina area of the community.

Threatened by impending rainfall, the camp leaders decided to relocate the children to a nearby church. While two group leaders returned to collect belongings left behind at the original campsite, they were ambushed by suspected herdsmen. One leader managed to escape, but Johnson tragically lost his life in the attack.

Narrating the heartbreaking series of events, the Chief of Igala in Orozo, Amadu Zachariah, provided details of the ambush, according to a report by Sahara Reporters, saying that “On their way back to carry their load, people suspected to be Fulani boys laid an ambush and attacked them.

“One escaped, and one was killed as they ran in different directions.” Efforts to rescue Johnson after the alarm was raised proved futile, as he had already been killed before help could arrive.

The local community, alongside Zachariah, has expressed frustration and disappointment over the lack of progress in identifying and apprehending the culprits.

Police investigations revealed that Fulani herdsmen residing in the area had fled, leaving unanswered questions about their involvement. While the Fulani community leaders in the area promised to cooperate with the authorities to locate the attackers, no arrests have been made so far.

“They went and reported the incident at the police station,” Zachariah said. “When the police arrived, they discovered that Fulani herdsmen living around the area had packed their things and run away.” Despite police efforts and assurances from local Fulani leaders to assist in identifying the perpetrators, the case remains unresolved, deepening the anguish of Johnson’s family.

In the midst of sorrow, the Fortress Ministry in Abuja, where Johnson was a beloved Church member, has paid tribute to his life and unwavering commitment to the Gospel. In an official statement signed by Rev. Samuel Ikani, the church described Johnson as a martyr who remained steadfast in his faith even in the face of danger.

“With deep sorrow but unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, Fortress Ministry Abuja announces the homegoing of our beloved brother, Bro. Johnson Enyo-Ojo John, who transitioned to glory on March 29, 2025,” the statement read. “Bro. Johnson was martyred while standing firm in his commitment to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. He lived a life of devotion, service, and unwavering love for God, inspiring us with his courage and dedication.”

As the community mourns the loss of a young man whose life was filled with promise and faith, calls for justice grow louder. Johnson’s death highlights ongoing concerns about safety and the need for decisive action against violence in the area.

His memory serves as both a painful reminder of the risks faced by innocent civilians and an inspiration for those touched by his faith and courage.
