The global Muslim community is set to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr on Sunday, March 30, 2025, as the crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal 1446 AH has been sighted in both Saudi Arabia and Nigeria. The news, heralding the end of Ramadan and the beginning of festivities, was officially confirmed by religious authorities in the two countries.
In Saudi Arabia, the crescent moon was sighted, prompting the official announcement on the Haramin Facebook page, a trusted platform for Muslims worldwide. The statement read, “The crescent moon for the month of Shawwal 1446 was sighted in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025.”
This announcement aligns with the Islamic tradition of verifying the new moon before marking the start of significant religious observances.
Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) also confirmed the crescent moon’s sighting. Under the leadership of its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the NSCIA declared that Sunday would be the first day of Shawwal and Eid-el-Fitr day.
The decision followed reports from the National Moon Sighting Committees, which documented credible sightings of the Shawwal crescent across various locations in Nigeria.
Prior to this confirmation, the NSCIA had issued a guideline urging Muslims across the country to search for the crescent moon on Saturday, March 29, 2025, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan.
The Secretary-General of the NSCIA, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, stated, “Muslims are enjoined to search for the crescent of Shawwal on the 29th of Ramadan. If sighted in accordance with moon sighting and verification standards, then His Eminence would declare Sunday, 30th March 2025, as the 1st of Shawwal and the day of ‘Idul Fitr.”
He further emphasized the Islamic tradition of moon sighting and highlighted the role of the National Moon-Sighting Committee in verifying credible reports.
“In addition to the established traditional and Islamic leaders in each locality, the members of the National Moon-Sighting Committee (NMSC) could be contacted to report any credible and positive sighting of the crescent of Shawwal 1446 AH,” Oloyede added.
Following the official confirmation of the new moon’s sighting, the Sultan of Sokoto extended warm Eid-al-Fitr greetings to the Nigerian Muslim Ummah. “Let us continue to pray for the peace, progress, and development of our nation. May Allah’s guidance and blessings be with us all during this joyous celebration and beyond,” he said.
The NSCIA also joined in the felicitations, extending goodwill to the entire Muslim world. Their statement read, “The council beseeches Allah to grant everyone the opportunity to witness many more of it in good health and divine guidance.”
As preparations for Eid-al-Fitr festivities begin, millions of Muslims in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, and around the world are united by the shared joy of this auspicious occasion.
The day signifies the end of a month-long spiritual journey of fasting, prayer, and reflection, and ushers in celebrations filled with gratitude, charity, and communal harmony.
Eid Mubarak to all celebrating!
