Abuja, Nigeria – From October 21 to 24, 2024, the West Africa Agroecology Alliance (3AO) and the West Africa Organic Network (WAfrONet) will convene a Regional Forum on Agroecology and Organic Farming. The event, held in partnership with ECOWAS and ActionAid Nigeria, aims to promote food sovereignty in West Africa through sustainable food systems.
Themed “Financing the Transformation of Sustainable Food and Nutrition Systems for Food Sovereignty in West Africa through Organic Farming and Agroecology,” the forum will bring together approximately 400 stakeholders from farmers’ organizations, public institutions, civil society, research, policy, and private sectors.
West Africa faces significant challenges, including food insecurity, climate change, land degradation, and insecurity, which weaken production systems. To address these issues, the forum seeks to:
- Promote sustainable food systems through agroecology and organic farming.
- Strengthen food sovereignty in West Africa.
- Analyze opportunities and challenges in funding agroecology and organic farming.
- Renew commitments among stakeholders to scale up best practices.
The four-day event features:
- 6 keynote presentations
- 8 panel discussions
- 11 thematic working groups
- A dialogue session with decision-makers from regional institutions (ECOWAS, UEMOA, CILSS, CORAF)
The forum’s overall objective is to develop sustainable food systems, adopting policies and public interventions based on agroecology, organic farming, and climate-smart agriculture best practices.
Partners, including ECOWAS, the European Union, AFD, Adaptation Fund, BOAD, Green Climate Fund, and ActionAid, will provide technical and financial support.
“This forum is a crucial step towards achieving food sovereignty in West Africa,” said 3AO/WAfrONet press release. “We look forward to fruitful discussions and commitments from stakeholders to promote sustainable agriculture practices.”
The Regional Forum on Agroecology and Organic Farming is a significant opportunity for West Africa to address its food security challenges and promote sustainable agriculture practices.
