The political landscape in Benue State took an interesting turn yesterday as former Governor Samuel Ortom declared that nobody has the right to disband the G-14, a pressure group within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
Ortom made this assertion during a courtesy visit from the G-14 at his Makurdi residence, where he emphasized the group’s importance in promoting the party’s interests.
“The G-14 is a vital component of our party, and nobody, regardless of their position, has the authority to disband it,” Ortom stated. “As the conscience of the party, you must continue to encourage and support our leadership at all levels, from national to ward.”
Ortom commended the G-14 for their selfless sacrifice and dedication to the party’s growth. He also extended an invitation to members to attend the state congress scheduled for Thursday.
Dr. Laha Dzever, leader of the G-14, praised Ortom for conducting smooth ward and local government congresses in the state. “Your leadership has been exemplary, and we have confidence in your ability to resolve any disputes within the party,” Dzever said.
Dzever clarified that the G-14 was formed in 2015 by elders from the 14 Tiv-speaking local governments to rescue the party. He assured Ortom that the group remains solidly behind him as the leader of the party in the state.
Various members of the G-14, including David Amo, Samuel Utov, Veronica Gajir, Samuel Akough, Joseph Nengean, and others, reaffirmed Ortom’s leadership and pledged loyalty. They emphasized the party’s tradition of recognizing the governor or immediate past governor as leader.
Utov wondered why someone would claim to have disbanded the G-14, stressing that even Ortom, as the leader of the party, cannot dissolve the group. “Only God can dissolve the G-14,” Utov declared.
Gajir called on Ortom to galvanize the party to return to power in 2027, while Akough assured him of the youths’ support.
Joseph Nengean appreciated Ortom’s efforts in maintaining security in the Sankera area during his tenure and prayed for his protection.
Chief Atsaga Anemba reiterated Ortom’s leadership, citing the party’s convention. Elder Shimawa Adzaigba urged the G-14 to resolve the crisis within the party.
Ortese Gbegi commended Ortom’s leadership and smooth conduct of congresses.
Local government chairmen, including Terseer Adigoh and Paul Tion, pledged their loyalty to Ortom and assured him of their support.
The meeting reinforced Ortom’s position as the leader of the PDP in Benue State and demonstrated the G-14’s commitment to the party’s growth.
As the political landscape in Benue State continues to evolve, the G-14’s role remains crucial in promoting the PDP’s interests.
