NGO Makes Case for Humane Treatment of Asylum Seekers and Refugees, Demands Sustainable Solutions to Root Causes

The Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocacy Foundation, also known as Asylum And Refugee Rights Advocates (ARRA), at its maiden world press conference in Abuja, Nigeria, addressed the pressing global issue of mass exodus from Africa, the Middle East, and least developed economies.
Dr. Okey Ezugwu Esq., Founder/Executive Director of ARRA, emphasized the need for collective action to address the root causes of this crisis.
The Root Cause: Poor Leadership and Governance
Dr. Ezugwu stated, “Poor leadership and governance are the primary drivers of this crisis. Corruption, human rights abuses, and economic mismanagement have created an environment where citizens are forced to flee for survival.”
He highlighted that if governments provide the right leadership, the challenges faced by asylum seekers and refugees would be minimized.
The Crisis: Conflict, Persecution, and Poverty
The UNHCR reports over 26 million refugees and asylum seekers worldwide, with the majority coming from Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan, and Myanmar.
Dr. Ezugwu noted that the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Ethiopia are among the top countries of origin for refugees and asylum seekers in Africa.
The Need for Humane Treatment
Dr. Ezugwu urged governments to ensure that asylum seekers and refugees have access to legal representation, fair trials, and expedited proceedings without inhumane incarcerations.
He emphasized that they should be treated first as human beings, with dignity and respect, in their host countries and communities.
While calling for global action, the nongovernmental organisation called on governments, international organizations, and civil society to:
- Address the root causes of conflict and instability.
- Ensure humane treatment of asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants.
- Provide access to legal representation and fair trials.
- Increase funding for refugee support and resettlement programs.
- Promote inclusive and sustainable development in countries of origin.
Dr. Ezugwu concluded, “The mass exodus of citizens from Africa, the Middle East, and least developed economies is a complex issue that requires a collective response. As Asylum and Refugee Rights Advocates, we will continue to push for humane treatment, fair policies, and sustainable solutions. Together, we can make a difference and create a more just and equitable world for all.”
