Nigerians To Pay More for “Upgraded” International Passport As New Travel Document’s Tariff Takes Off

In a move that’s left many Nigerians feeling “passport-less,” the federal government has announced a significant increase in the cost of obtaining the country’s international passport. The new fees, which take effect on September 1, 2024, are part of efforts to “upgrade” the travel document’s quality and integrity.
But don’t worry, frequent flyers! The hike only applies to those applying from within Nigeria’s borders. Diaspora dwellers, you’re off the hook – for now.
So, what’s the damage? A 32-page passport booklet with 5-year validity will now set you back N50,000 (up from N35,000), while a 64-page booklet with 10-year validity will cost a cool N100,000 (up from N70,000).
The Nigeria Immigration Service has apologized for any inconvenience, but we’re guessing that won’t quite cover the cost of a last-minute ticket to escape the price hike.
The about 43 percent hike on the Nigerian International passport is coming amidst recent nationwide protests over high cost of living in the country.
