Investigative journalist and filmmaker David Hundeyin has exposed the insidious influence of external actors on Africa’s development, warning that “the reason that your operating environment is always trying to kill you… is because nearly all of the think tanks, policy research institutes, civil society organisations, and media in Africa are owned, funded, directed or controlled by external actors who are trying to kill you.”

Hundeyin argued that these external forces are deliberately stifling Africa’s growth to serve their own interests, noting that “your growth and success are not in their interests.”

He emphasized that African business leaders must come together to fund local think tanks, policy research institutes, civil society organizations, and media outlets to counter this influence.

“Their think tanks are recommending that your countries should defund higher education and starve you of the human capital you need to succeed,” Hundeyin warned.

“Their policy research institutes are publishing papers calling for the continent with 3.9 percent of global emissions to do ‘energy transition’ to cut the emissions it doesn’t have.”

Hundeyin’s urgent call to action is clear: “If you have ambitions of becoming what you really ought to become, you must come together and fund African think tanks, policy research institutes, civil society organisations, and – especially – media.”

He acknowledged that this investment will not yield direct profits but is crucial for creating a favorable business environment and unlocking the continent’s vast potential.

In a stark warning, Hundeyin concluded, “If you don’t come together and do this, rest assured that white men are already doing it for you. Just that their think tanks… are focused on killing you.”
