Advertising practitioner, Mr. Oru Leonard Oru, FRPA, has described the inauguration of the Advertising Offences Tribunal as a major step towards strengthening accountability, professionalism and ethical conduct in Nigeria’s advertising industry.

Oru, in a statement on Wednesday, commended the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) for their roles in advancing the regulatory framework of the sector.

He said the establishment of the Tribunal had come at an important time in the development of Nigeria’s advertising and marketing communications industry, noting that an effective dispute and enforcement mechanism was essential to sustaining professional standards.

Oru stressed that the impact of the Tribunal would ultimately be measured by its ability to enforce compliance, address breaches and ensure that those who violate established professional standards are held accountable.

“The inauguration of the Advertising Offences Tribunal is a welcome development. Its effectiveness will go a long way in determining the future of advertising practice in Nigeria and in further strengthening professionalism in the sector,” he said.

The advertising practitioner commended Minister Idris for his support for measures designed to improve regulation within the industry, describing the initiative as capable of reinforcing public confidence in the advertising profession.

He also praised the ARCON Director-General for providing leadership towards the advancement of professional standards, saying sustained regulatory reforms would create a more credible environment for practitioners and businesses operating within the sector.

Oru urged members of the newly inaugurated Tribunal to discharge their duties with impartiality, integrity and professionalism, noting that public and industry confidence would be critical to its success.

He further appealed to practitioners, advertisers, agencies and other stakeholders to support the Tribunal and cooperate with regulatory initiatives aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and responsible advertising practices.

According to him, a stronger regulatory environment would not only protect the integrity of the profession but also contribute to the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s advertising and marketing communications industry.
