A devastating stampede occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday, resulting in the loss of 10 lives, including four children.

The incident happened during a food distribution event, which was intended to provide relief to vulnerable and elderly members of the community.

According to eyewitnesses, the stampede occurred around 7:00 am when a crowd of over 3,000 people surged forward to collect food items. Many attendees had arrived as early as 4:00 am, hoping to secure their share of the palliatives.

The National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, confirmed the tragic incident, noting that the distribution of palliatives had been suspended indefinitely.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has confirmed that 10 people lost their lives in the stampede, although the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still unclear.

This tragedy bears a striking resemblance to a similar incident that occurred just days earlier in Ibadan, Oyo State, where a stampede at a children’s funfair resulted in the deaths of at least 35 children.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety and organization of large-scale events, particularly those involving the distribution of food and other essential items.

As the investigation into the incident continues, many are left to mourn the loss of life and to question how such a tragedy could have occurred.
