Nigeria Boosts Security Ties with Saudi Arabia in Historic Defence Pact

Nigeria has taken a major step toward strengthening its international security partnerships with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The agreement, concluded on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, sets in motion a comprehensive framework for enhanced defence and military cooperation between the two nations.
The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, signed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, while Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari, the Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, represented the Saudi government. Both parties affirmed that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to regional stability, professional development, and long-term strategic collaboration.
Dr. Matawalle described the development as a critical achievement for Nigeria’s defence sector. “The signing of this MoU is a significant milestone,” he noted. “It has been on the drawing board for some time, and its conclusion will strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture and enhance the capacity of our armed forces.”
The MoU, which will remain in force for an initial five-year period, is subject to review and renewal for another term of the same duration. Either country may withdraw from the agreement with at least three months’ prior notification through diplomatic channels.
The pact opens new avenues for cooperation in essential areas of defence, including professional military training, joint exercises, logistical support, intelligence exchange, technical assistance, and other mutually agreed activities. Officials say these provisions will help elevate the operational capacity and readiness of Nigeria’s armed forces.
Key expected gains for Nigeria include expanded training opportunities for military personnel, improved interoperability through joint drills and shared doctrines, and enhanced counter-terrorism operations driven by deeper intelligence collaboration. The agreement also aims to strengthen Nigeria’s response capabilities against violent extremism, insurgency, and organised crime.
The Ministry of Defence hailed the MoU as a forward-looking and strategic tool that aligns with Nigeria’s broader security reforms and defence modernisation agenda. According to the Ministry, the pact will play a vital role in advancing national stability while consolidating Nigeria’s partnerships with global allies committed to peace and security.
