The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a thunderstorm which occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, snapped its 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line, causing damage to property along the route.

In a statement signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company explained that the cut conductor fell to the ground near Tower 97, where it ignited a house located directly beneath the line, burnt a parked vehicle, and killed two cows in the vicinity. Fortunately, no human life was lost.

Following the incident, the Regional Manager of TCN, Enugu Region, Engr. Tom Inugonum, led a team of engineers to the site for an on-the-spot assessment. The company’s Quick Response Line Maintenance Team has since commenced dismantling the damaged section of the line to pave the way for restringing a new conductor.

Despite the disruption, TCN assured residents that electricity supply to Nsukka and surrounding communities has not been interrupted.

A temporary diversion of bulk electricity through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation has been activated, ensuring continued supply to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) for onward distribution to the affected areas.

The company, while expressing relief that no human casualties were recorded, cautioned members of the public against building, parking vehicles, or carrying out activities within transmission line Rights of Way (RoW).

“This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of encroaching on power transmission corridors. Such activities pose serious risks to lives and property,” TCN warned.

Reaffirming its commitment to safety and reliability, the company urged Nigerians to respect power infrastructure and comply with safety guidelines, noting that it remains dedicated to maintaining a stable and secure national grid.
