A leading voice in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Hon. Stephen Abraham Ajiya, has hailed the party’s recent National Executive Committee (NEC) decision on rotational presidency, describing it as a turning point in the opposition party’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Sun, Ajiya said the move restores confidence in the PDP’s ability to reclaim the presidency it lost to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015.

According to him, maintaining the rotational presidency principle, which the PDP adopted two decades ago, is critical to Nigeria’s political stability and national cohesion. “The rotational presidency remains the best for a heterogeneous nation like Nigeria to make a headway politically. It helps build political ideology and history for our children. So, I think the decision to maintain that transition is the best,” he said.

He stressed that the North must support a southern candidate in 2027 to allow the region complete its turn before power returns northward. “Any northerner who goes against the southern presidential candidate in 2027 is anti-North. The calculation is to give the South their eight years while power returns to the North,” he argued.

On the likely flagbearer, Ajiya identified former President Goodluck Jonathan as the most suitable candidate for the PDP. He noted that Jonathan, who previously served as Vice President and later as President, commands experience and credibility while offering the North a guarantee that he would only serve a single term.

“We in the North know that Jonathan remains the best option because he wouldn’t ask for another tenure, having spent four years before his 2015 defeat. Jonathan is experienced, tried, and tested. He doesn’t need much introduction. So, we are happy hearing the news,” Ajiya explained.

The PDP chieftain, however, urged members to close ranks and avoid the mistakes of the past. He appealed for unity and discipline, warning that internal strife or negative politicking could derail the party’s comeback bid.
