The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has elected Hon. Engr. Ikenna Adikibe, the Executive Chairman of Oru West Local Government Area in Imo State, as its new Deputy National President.

His emergence was confirmed during the ALGON National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on July 16–17, 2025, at Zuma Hill Resort, Niger State. The position had been vacant prior to his appointment, which now fills a critical gap in the leadership structure of the Association.

According to the communiqué issued at the end of the NEC meeting, the election was part of efforts by the national leadership to reposition ALGON for more effective service delivery at the grassroots level. “Hon. (Engr.) Ikenna Adikibe… will bring along his over 30 years of administrative acumen and capacity development sagacity to bear on the Association,” the communiqué noted. His experience is expected to support the Association in aligning with the policy direction of the current leadership and contribute significantly to value addition across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Councils.

In his acceptance speech, Adikibe expressed deep gratitude to stakeholders who supported his elevation. “I thank His Excellency Governor Hope Uzodimma for being a great leader,” he said, also appreciating the ALGON National President, Hon. Engr. Bello Lawal; the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Odunayo Ategbero; the NEC, BOT, and ALGON Secretariat staff for what he described as their “unwavering trust and support.”

He pledged total loyalty to the leadership and reaffirmed his commitment to delivering tangible results that will impact communities directly. “I assure all stakeholders of my dedication to our shared mission of deepening grassroots governance and improving service delivery at the local government level,” he said.

The NEC, in its broader deliberations, emphasized the importance of strong leadership within ALGON to drive strategic partnerships, strengthen institutional capacity, and improve service outcomes for local councils nationwide. Adikibe’s appointment is seen as a step in that direction, expected to energize efforts around health service delivery, development planning, and community engagement.
