The Association of Female Comrades (AFC) has issued a strong condemnation of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension, calling for justice regarding her allegations of sexual harassment against Nigeria’s President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
In a statement signed by the association’s President, Comrade Muniretu Isah, the AFC criticized the Senate’s decision, stating that the dismissal of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition—citing procedural technicalities—was “a blatant disregard for the seriousness of the allegations.”
The petition, which accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, was dismissed by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. The committee argued that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s personally signed petition violated Senate rules and cited the matter as subjudice since it was already in court.
Senate President Akpabio has denied the allegations, stating, “At no time did I ever attempt any sexual harassment,” while emphasizing his respect for women, given his upbringing and role as a father.
The female body has called for a thorough, impartial investigation into the allegations, warning against the suppression of women’s voices. “The association insists that technicalities must not overshadow justice,” the statement reads.
Standing firmly in solidarity with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, the group urged the Senate to uphold principles of fairness and accountability, emphasizing the need to safeguard the rights of women in leadership.
