The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the national grid experienced a disturbance at approximately 11:29 am today, resulting from a sudden rise in frequency.

In a swift response, TCN’s recovery efforts ensured the Abuja Axis was restored within 28 minutes. However, recovery is still ongoing for other affected areas.

According to TCN, the frequency spike was caused by issues encountered at one of its substations, which was shut down to prevent further complications.

The company is concurrently undertaking significant repair work on several critical transmission lines and substations. These projects include the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro-Mando axis, major upgrades at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV transmission line.

Following the submission of the investigative report on previous grid collapses, TCN has begun addressing the identified weaknesses in the transmission system. Efforts are underway to close gaps highlighted in the report and enhance the overall stability and resilience of the grid.

TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, acknowledged the impact of these disruptions and appealed for public understanding. “We recognize the vital role stable power plays in Nigeria’s socio-economic development and assure the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the grid’s long-term stability.”

Mbah added that TCN is working diligently to address infrastructure damage, including vandalized transmission lines, to provide a more efficient and reliable electricity supply.

The company says it remains committed to improving the reliability of electricity supply and ensuring the grid’s stability, in line with the recommendations of the investigative committee.
