The Save Enugu Group (SEG), a frontline accountability watchdog and socio-political pressure group, has congratulated the winners of Enugu State’s local government elections, advising them to focus on delivering the greater good.
“As leaders at the grassroots, your focus should be on ensuring unparalleled development in rural communities across the state,” SEG emphasized in a press statement. “The people have entrusted you with their mandate, and it’s imperative you deliver on your campaign promises.”
Comrade James Ezema, SEG’s Secretary General, stressed that the elected officials must prioritize the security and welfare of the people, especially during challenging economic times. “The residents of Enugu State expect nothing but the best from you, and we urge you to rise to the occasion.”
Ezema appealed to the winners to avoid the winner-takes-all syndrome, urging them to “extend your hands of fellowship to those who contested against you, and work together to drive robust development across the state.” By doing so, SEG noted, the winners will demonstrate their commitment to the well-being of all Enugu State residents.
“The winner-takes-all mentality has no place in our politics,” SEG said. “We must work together, regardless of party affiliations or differences, to move Enugu State forward.”
SEG also called on all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, and community leaders, to cooperate with the elected officials to ensure a seamless transition and effective governance.
“We urge aggrieved persons to seek redress through legal and constitutional means, never resorting to self-help,” the statement added. “Let us work together to build a better Enugu State for all.”
As a notable watchdog in the state, SEG vowed to continue monitoring issues relating to leadership and development. The group assured that it remains committed to playing its role in holding government at all levels accountable, ensuring that the interests of the people are protected and promoted.
“We will keep track of the elected officials’ performance, ensuring they deliver on their campaign promises,” the group pledged. “We will also engage with the government to address pressing issues affecting the state, and work tirelessly to ensure that the dividends of democracy are equitably distributed.”
SEG reiterated its commitment to good governance and development in Enugu State, aiming to create a better future for all citizens by working together with stakeholders.
“The people of Enugu State deserve nothing but the best,” SEG said. “We will continue to advocate for their rights and interests, and hold those in power accountable.”
The local government elections, held across the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu State, saw the emergence of new council chairmen and councillors. Residents expect a new era of development and progress, with SEG’s call for focus on the greater good serving as a timely reminder.
As the newly elected council officials prepare to assume office, the people of Enugu State eagerly await the implementation of campaign promises and the transformation of their communities. With SEG’s watchful eye and advocacy, the state is poised for a brighter future.
