The event, themed “Enhancing the Functionality of Local Councils in Nigeria: Issues, Perspectives, and Opportunities,” aims to reflect on the recent Supreme Court judgement and emerging issues in the polity.
The technical session, organized by UK International Development and Partnership to Engage Reform and Learn (PERL), brings together notable figures, including the Deputy National President of ALGON, Hon Moses Nomeh; National Union of Local Governments Employees (NULGE) President, Olatunji Ambali; Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) representatives; Members of the National Assembly Constitution Review Committee; and Development Partners.
In his opening remarks, Hon Maifata expressed gratitude to the organizers for their role in the autonomy of local governments in Nigeria.
He emphasized the need for introspection and retrospect on local government administration since 1999.
Prof Auwal Yadudu, Chairman of the Technical Committee, Senate Committee on Constitution Review, appreciated the Supreme Court judgement and urged ALGON to utilize the window offered by the Constitution amendment to articulate their position for consideration.
The technical session seeks to maximize the outcome for better and transformative administration, ensuring prudent use of resources and meeting the great expectations of citizens.
With the attendance of ALGON (NEC) members drawn from all states of the Federation and other Development Partners, the event is poised to drive meaningful change in local government administration in Nigeria.
