In a significant move to combat maternal and infant mortality, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, wife of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, has introduced the Mama Care Initiative. This health insurance scheme aims to provide comprehensive healthcare services to expectant mothers across the state.

Mrs. Mbah has enrolled approximately 1,701 pregnant women in a one-year health insurance programme.

The initiative operates in collaboration with the Custos Care Foundation and it encompasses antenatal care, safe delivery, and postnatal care.

The beneficiaries received financial assistance and essential food supplies, including 1,701 bags of rice, to support their nutritional needs.

Mrs. Mbah emphasized the need to shift from traditional birth attendants to modern healthcare facilities equipped to handle childbirth complexities.

Through the Mama Care Initiative, the state government is taking decisive action by providing a one-year health insurance premium for expectant mothers. Each of the 17 local government areas will have access to comprehensive healthcare services, ensuring safe and supervised conditions for delivery in hospitals and healthcare centers.

Mrs. Mbah expressed her commitment to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality in Enugu State.

She stated, “It is unacceptable that women should lose their lives during childbirth or that infants should face preventable complications. Our vision is to provide security and support for mothers, ensuring safe deliveries and healthy outcomes.”

The Mama Care Initiative extends beyond insurance, it includes prenatal and postnatal care, health education, and access to medical resources.

By combining health insurance with proactive medical outreach, the state aims to create a robust support system for expectant mothers.
