In a shocking repeat of destruction, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the demolition of two pivotal towers along the critical Damaturu-Maiduguri 330kV Single Circuit Transmission Line. The towers, identified as T193 and T194, fell victim to vandalism in a nefarious act that plunged Maiduguri into darkness.

The calamity struck at approximately 10:15 pm last night, coinciding with the tripping of the 150MVA power transformer at Molai Substation and the subsequent failure of the 330kV transmission line that feeds bulk power to Maiduguri from the Damaturu Transmission Substation.

Efforts to reroute the power supply were thwarted, leaving engineers scrambling for solutions. A patrol early this morning, comprising TCN engineers and security forces, made the grim discovery of the towers’ ruins, now a crime scene littered with explosive device fragments.

This incident marks a distressing déjà vu, echoing the December 28, 2023, attack where towers T193, T194, and T195 were similarly decimated by improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The recent attack targeted the very structures that had been restored following the previous year’s devastation.

As TCN evaluates the damage and strategizes for the swift resumption of power, they also issue a clarion call for collective vigilance. The company, alongside security personnel, vows to safeguard the nation’s electrical infrastructure and urges the government and citizens alike to unite against such acts of sabotage that threaten Nigeria’s energy security and communal assets.

Ndidi Mbah, GM of Public Affairs, reaffirms TCN’s commitment to overcoming these challenges and restoring normalcy to the affected regions.
