The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has adjusted its approach to the investigation of the Sallah celebration disturbance in Kano State, which occurred on March 30, 2025. Initially, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II was invited by the Force to provide his account regarding the events that led to a public confrontation during the festive period. However, this invitation has now been rescinded.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, made this decision following advice from stakeholders and to uphold the principle of impartial policing. The IGP has instructed operatives from the Force Intelligence Department (FID) to proceed to Kano to obtain Alhaji Sanusi’s statement directly.
The Sallah Day clashes erupted after Alhaji Sanusi, defying prior agreements between the two contested Emirs of Kano—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—mounted a horse in a procession after Eid prayers.
This act triggered unrest among local youths, resulting in the tragic death of Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others. The police had previously intervened by deploying top officials to mediate and avert such conflict, yet the celebration ultimately took a violent turn.
Under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, the NPF remains unwavering in its commitment to impartiality, professionalism, and justice. Several arrests have been made, and investigations continue with the aim of bringing all culpable parties to account for their actions during this incident.
