ALGON Celebrates Supreme Court Victory, Urges Harmonious Relationship Between Tiers of Government

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has expressed profound gratitude to the Supreme Court for its historic judgment granting autonomy to local governments. At its 48th National Executive Council meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State, ALGON praised the President, Nigeria Governors Forum, Judiciary, National Assembly, and other stakeholders for their support.

This was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by Hon.
Barr. Sani Ahmad Haruna, ALGON Gombe State and Hon. Emiola Gazal B., ALGON Ogun State after the meeting in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

ALGON National Executive Council (NEC) advised council chairmen to promote harmonious relationships between tiers and arms of government, in line with global best practices.

The council appreciated private concerns and institutions that made presentations on local government development and pledged to collaborate for the benefit of the grassroots populace.

ALGON emphasized that local governments have the capacity to address insecurity, primary health care, basic education, water, rural development, and other critical infrastructure responsibilities.

The NEC welcomed the appointment of Hon. (Barr.) Sani Ahmad Haruna as National Legal Adviser and expressed confidence in his ability to serve.

Finally, ALGON thanked Nigerians for their resilience and trust, promising to intensify efforts to offer responsive and responsible leadership.

“We are grateful for the Supreme Court judgment granting autonomy to local governments. We urge council chairmen to promote harmonious relationships with other tiers and arms of government,” said ALGON.
