The Movement for Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta (MSDND) has voiced concerns over the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited) and its managing director, Mr. Mele Kyari’s allegations of rampant oil theft in the Niger Delta, sending strong message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the development.

The group’s statement, delivered by publicity secretary Kelvin Orughoe, disputed the NNPC Limited’s reported discovery of illegal pipeline connections and refineries, labeling them as deceptive tactics aimed at misleading President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian populace.

Discrepancies in Oil Production Figures

Orughoe highlighted discrepancies in the NNPC Limited’s narrative, questioning the timing of the sudden drop in Nigeria’s crude oil production during Kyari’s tenure. He pointed to recent OPEC data that shows a significant decrease in production, contrasting sharply with the most peaceful periods in the Niger Delta’s history.

Call for Transparency and Accountability

The MSDND urged President Tinubu to scrutinize the NNPC Limited’s figures and called for an investigation into the financial management of loans acquired for refinery revamps, particularly the $1.2 billion loan for the Port Harcourt Refinery, which remains non-operational. The group’s statement emphasizes the need for transparency and accountability, especially in light of the hardships faced by the Niger Delta people amidst claims of oil wealth theft.

A Plea for Honest Governance

In conclusion, the MSDND’s plea to President Tinubu was clear: to look beyond the NNPCL’s distorted facts and seek the truth about the real leakages in Nigeria’s crude oil production. The group’s challenge to the NNPCL and Kyari is a call for honest governance and a commitment to the well-being of the Niger Delta region and its inhabitants.
