The NSCDC custody deaths in Minna have sparked national outrage. An APC chieftain, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Ajia, has now condemned the incident. He described the death of 37 suspected illegal miners as a grave tragedy.

Dr. Ajia is the Dan Amanan Fune Emirate of Yobe State. He called for a full, independent, and transparent investigation. He made the call in a statement on Monday. His Director of Communications, Mallam AbdulRahaman Aliagan, issued the statement.

What Happened During The Raid?

The victims were arrested during an anti-illegal mining operation. The operation took place on September 15 and 16. Officers raided the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of Niger State.

Scores of young men were arrested during the raid. However, 37 of them died while in NSCDC custody. Therefore, questions have emerged about detention procedures. In addition, survivors alleged overcrowding and lack of ventilation.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has intervened. Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo suspended the Niger State Commandant. Furthermore, he constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the deaths.

Ajia Condemns Deaths, Demands Due Process

Dr. Ajia commiserated with the Federal Government and Niger State Government. He also commiserated with the families of the deceased. He said the circumstances demand honest answers.

According to him, suspects deserve due process, not death. He stressed that persons in custody retain their human rights. Consequently, security agencies must uphold detention standards.

He said detention centres must have adequate supervision. In addition, they must provide basic necessities and safeguards. Moreover, officers must ensure humane holding conditions at all times.

“The death of individuals while in state custody raises serious questions regarding compliance with established detention procedures,” Ajia said.

Call For Professionalism And Accountability

The APC chieftain also called for better coordination among security agencies. He urged proper profiling and prosecution of suspects. He insisted that authorities must follow legal channels.

He noted that enforcement of mining laws must respect human dignity. Therefore, he warned against inhumane treatment of detainees.

Ajia commended the Federal Government for its swift response. He also praised the Niger State Government for its intervention. He welcomed the 10-man investigative panel and the suspension of linked officers.

However, he demanded accountability. He said any officer found culpable must face the law. This applies irrespective of rank or position.

Ajia Sues For Calm In Niger

In addition, Ajia appealed for calm among residents. He specifically urged youths in Niger State to remain peaceful. He warned that anger must not lead to further loss of lives.

Furthermore, he urged authorities to communicate openly with families. He said regular updates will build public confidence.

He concluded that accountability and professionalism are essential. According to him, these pillars will strengthen trust in security institutions. He prayed that Almighty Allah grants the departed eternal rest.
