The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice (CCSG) has expressed strong support for ongoing reforms in the Nigeria Police Force, commending the leadership of the IGP Olatunji Disu for what it described as bold and strategic steps toward institutional transformation.

In a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, the coalition praised the Inspector-General’s directive to restructure and streamline police tactical units across the country, describing the move as a “decisive step toward eliminating the proliferation of uncoordinated squads.”

According to the statement, the reform, which limits tactical teams to a maximum of five per State Command, represents not a disbandment but a “Strategic Rebirth” aimed at enhancing supervision, curbing operational excesses, and redeploying personnel to divisional police stations where they are most needed.

“The Coalition hails the IGP’s recent directive to restructure and optimize police tactical units nationwide,” the statement read. “By rationalizing these teams… IGP Tunji Disu has taken a decisive step toward eliminating the proliferation of uncoordinated squads.”

The group also lauded the appointment of DIG Margaret Agebe Ochalla as head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), describing it as a merit-based decision aligned with the reform agenda.

“We particularly applaud the well-deserved appointment of DIG Margaret Agebe Ochalla as the head of the Force Criminal Investigation Department,” the statement noted. “DIG Ochalla’s track record of discipline and her reformist agenda make her the ideal choice to oversee the nation’s premier investigative wing during this transformative period.”

The CCSG expressed confidence that under her leadership, the FCID would be defined by “forensic excellence, integrity, and strict adherence to the rule of law.”

Linking the reforms to broader national policy direction, the coalition stated that the developments align with the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in advancing institutional discipline and intelligence-led policing.

“These internal reforms are a direct manifestation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope’ Agenda for the security sector,” the statement added, noting that the current Police Management Team is working to build a force that is truly “the people’s friend.”

The coalition further called on stakeholders, including the media, international community, and other civil society organizations, to support the reform process.

“We must move past the era of sensationalism and provide the constructive support necessary to achieve the safe and secure Nigeria we all desire,” the statement urged.

Reaffirming its role, the CCSG pledged continued engagement as a bridge between the police and the public, emphasizing that the success of the reforms would depend on sustained collaboration and public trust.
