Following the passing of Senator Okey Ezea last year, debates over who should complete his tenure in the Senate have continued to generate reactions across Enugu North Senatorial District, otherwise known as Nsukka zone.
The late senator represented the district in the 10th National Assembly before his death, which created a vacancy in representation for the zone and, in particular, his home community of Itchi.
Weighing in on the matter, a media personality, Hon. Nkechi Joy Ugwu, has justified calls for Itchi community to be allowed to complete the tenure of the late lawmaker, anchoring her position on the existing zoning arrangement that has traditionally guided political offices in Enugu State.
Hon. Ugwu noted that although time has passed since Senator Ezea’s demise, the vacancy left behind remains significant, especially for Itchi community, which she described as having lost its elected representative mid-tenure.
She argued that fairness and political consistency demand that the community be given the opportunity to complete the office their son was elected to occupy.
She expressed strong confidence in Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, describing him as a leader capable of healing the wounds of the grieving community by ensuring that Itchi is considered in filling the vacant senatorial seat.
According to her, such a decision would reflect sensitivity to the pains of the people and respect for established political balance in the state.
Hon. Ugwu further referenced concerns reportedly raised by the Itchi Progressive Union over what it described as aggressive jostling to replace the late senator.
She then said that the union had watched with dismay how various individuals and groups embarked on lobbying of government officials and social media campaigns, even at a time when the community was still mourning its loss.
She maintained that the most fitting honour the people of Nsukka zone can accord late Senator Okey Ezea is to allow his community to complete the tenure he died holding.
For her, doing so would not only uphold the zoning principle but also serve as a genuine expression of regard, unity and shared love among the people of the zone.
